During my time as a student, the D.C. Public Schools system experienced a significant turnover in leadership, with several superintendents taking the helm over the years. “Floretta D. McKenzie served from July 1, 1981, until February 8, 1988, followed by Andrew E. Jenkins, who held the position from May 25, 1988, to May 15, 1991. In between these two leaders, Jenkins briefly stepped in as acting superintendent from February 9, 1988, to May 24, 1988. Franklin L. Smith then took over the role, leading the district from May 15, 1991, until November 4, 1996.”
Throughout Mr. Smith's tenure, I was navigating my own educational journey as both a high school and college student. This period was pivotal for me, as I was not only absorbing knowledge but also observing the dynamics of educational leadership and its impact on student engagement. The changes in superintendents often brought about shifts in policy and focus, which I found particularly interesting as I pursued my studies in the visual arts. The varying degrees of support for visual arts education during these transitions left a lasting impression on me.
My reflections on this era are deeply rooted in my research and educational experiences, which have significantly influenced my development into a professional visual artist and art consultant. The drastic changes in educational leadership during my formative years sparked my curiosity about the direction of visual arts education and the apparent lack of enthusiasm for visual arts within the curriculum. This curiosity has driven me to explore the implications of such shifts and advocate for a more robust integration of the visual arts in educational settings, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to engage with and appreciate the visual arts.
However, I have not provided any visual arts educational services since 2018.
