Chromatic Underpass

Chromatic Underpass. Digital art created on canvas. August 14, 2024. Afrika Abney

Chromatic Underpass  is an abstract digital painting that references the underpass as a passageway. As I traverse this underpass, a dazzling array of light, shapes, and vibrant hues swirl around me, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The colors twist and merge in a fluid motion, igniting a sense of dynamism that enchants my senses and elevates the experience to something beyond the ordinary. Each step I take feels infused with an energy that transforms the simple act of moving through this space into a captivating journey, where reality seems to blur and the mundane fades away.

Progressing through this underpass, I find myself surrounded by a breathtaking display of illumination and color that envelops me completely. Rays of light stream through the architectural framework, casting a warm glow that accentuates the unique shapes and angles of the walls. As I navigate this vibrant corridor, I witness a continuous interplay of forms that emerge and vanish, while the rich spectrum of colors infuses the environment with a lively spirit.

In this underpass, I am immersed in a stunning spectacle of light and color that captivates my attention at every turn. The interplay of brightness filters through the structure, creating a radiant ambiance that brings the contours of the walls to life. Shapes ebb and flow in a mesmerizing rhythm, while the vivid colors swirl around me, transforming the ordinary journey into an exhilarating experience that resonates deeply within me

How Art Can Help Center a Student’s Learning Experience

When I was a student, I studied art at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, Corcoran and Bell Multicultural High School. Many years later while a student at the Corcoran, I taught art to many students. I strongly believe that art not only can help center a student's learning experience and can close the opportunity gap for many students.   www.kqed.org/mindshift/54370/how-art-can-help-center-a-students-learning-experience?fbclid=IwAR2z7Z-64q8OlMs2P1ki7zOLU8WM8zN_bWRVI8LlCdtvmjqSswMha4w-zEQ       The above photos were taken while I was a high school student at Bell from 1991 - 1993.  I gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photos above . Cerulean Canvas

“The color blue in abstract paintings often embodies a range of qualities that evoke various emotional and psychological responses. It is frequently associated with tranquility and calmness, creating a serene atmosphere that invites viewers to reflect and contemplate. The use of blue can also suggest depth and infinity, reminiscent of vast skies and deep oceans, which can lead to a sense of exploration and introspection. Artists may employ different shades of blue to convey distinct moods, from the soft pastels that evoke a gentle, soothing feeling to the bold, vibrant hues that can energize and inspire. In the realm of abstract art, blue serves as a powerful tool for expression, allowing artists to communicate complex ideas and emotions without the constraints of representational forms. The versatility of blue enables it to interact harmoniously with other colors, enhancing the overall composition and creating dynamic contrasts. For instance, when paired with warm colors like or...

The presence of darkness

“Charles Dickens eloquently captures the duality of existence by stating that while there are indeed profound shadows that loom over the world, the brilliance of its lights shines even more vividly against this backdrop. This observation reflects a deep understanding of the human experience, where moments of despair and darkness often serve to highlight the beauty and joy that life can offer. The interplay between light and shadow is not merely a physical phenomenon but a metaphor for the challenges and triumphs that define our journey through life. In his insightful commentary, Dickens suggests that the presence of darkness in our lives is an inevitable reality, yet it is precisely this darkness that accentuates the strength and vibrancy of the light. The contrast between the two elements serves to enhance our appreciation for the positive aspects of life, making them appear more pronounced and significant. This perspective encourages a recognition of the complexities of life, w...

Nature's Flow

Nature's Flow. Digital art created on canvas. September 20, 2024. Afrika Abney “Throughout my academic journey, I have consistently embraced the vibrant hues found in nature, which have served as a significant source of inspiration for my creative endeavors. This appreciation for natural colors has not only influenced my artistic expression but has also shaped the nurturing qualities I embody in my professional services. My commitment to integrating these elements into my work reflects a deep-seated belief in the power of nature to enhance both aesthetic appeal and emotional resonance.”

Tranquil Ascend

In the early morning hours, I observed the moon casting its radiant light across the light blue sky. The celestial body’s luminous presence was striking against the backdrop of the horizon, which was slowly awakening to the warmth of the day. This enchanting tableau evoked a sense of tranquility and motivation, as the interplay of light and color created a moment that felt both serene and uplifting. “A blue sky signifies a clear and unobstructed atmosphere during daylight hours, often referred to as the wild blue yonder. This vivid hue is a hallmark of beautiful weather, evoking feelings of openness and freedom. However, the emotional responses elicited by the blue sky and the moon can differ. The contrast between the moon's soft glow and the brightening sky serves as a reminder of the beauty found in nature's transitions. While the blue sky invites a sense of clarity and optimism, the moon often embodies mystery and introspection.”

Whispering Gray

“The term "whispering" in Whispering Gray evokes a sense of gentle influence, harmonizing beautifully with the soft gray hue that embodies a quiet yet profound source of inspiration for creative endeavors. This subtlety allows for a nuanced exploration of ideas, encouraging artists to delve into their imaginations while maintaining a serene backdrop that fosters innovation. The light gray color serves as a canvas itself, inviting a spectrum of interpretations and emotional responses that can enhance the creative process. At the heart of abstract art lies a unique capacity to defy traditional artistic boundaries and stimulate intellectual engagement. Artists often employ a diverse array of techniques, including layering, expressive brushwork, and the strategic use of light and shadow, to construct vibrant compositions that draw in the viewer. This artistic freedom not only serves as a reflection of the creator's innermost thoughts and emotions but also encourages the aud...
