Abstract art is a multidimensional style that takes many different shapes. Many people struggle to grasp abstract art because of its vagueness and lack of empirical depiction.


Abstract art doesn't try to represent anything in a visual realistic context, but more about creating a sense of thought, feeling, a reaction to a visual experience


-Because so many abstract artists vehemently reject any standards of quality in their work. This bothers people. An artist in the realist portrait genre does not like to hear that his years of work perfecting the human form are so easily “trumped” by an abstract artist's first work.


Abstract art doesn't contain recognizable objects, so there is nothing to grasp or hold onto. This can be very confusing, even threatening, to some who are not used to assigning their own meaning to what they see before them.”

James A. Porter

"James Amos Porter was the first African American art historian. Born on December 22, 1905 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Lydia and John Porter, a prominent minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Porter graduated  cum laude  in 1927 with a Bachelor of Science in art from Howard University. After graduating, he became an instructor of drawing and painting at Howard, teaching for 40 years, during which he was described as a gifted and influential teacher. Porter continued his education at the Art Student League in New York City, New York under Dimitri Romanovsky.
