The selection of themes

 The selection of themes for my abstract paintings is a deliberate and thoughtful process that reflects my artistic vision and personal experiences. Each theme serves as a foundation upon which I build my creative expression, allowing me to explore various emotions, concepts, and narratives. By choosing specific themes, I aim to convey deeper meanings and invite viewers to engage with the artwork on multiple levels, fostering a connection that transcends the visual elements alone.

My approach to selecting themes for abstract paintings is rooted in a desire to communicate complex ideas and feelings through non-representational forms. I often draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including nature, human emotions, and societal issues, which inform the direction of my work. This thematic exploration not only enriches the visual language of my paintings but also encourages a dialogue between the artwork and the audience, prompting them to reflect on their interpretations and emotional responses.


Ultimately, the themes I choose for my abstract paintings are integral to my artistic identity and the messages I wish to convey. They serve as a lens through which I can examine and express the intricacies of life, allowing me to push the boundaries of traditional art forms. By engaging with these themes, I strive to create a body of work that resonates with viewers, inviting them to embark on their own journey of discovery and interpretation within the abstract realm.


For example, in my abstract painting that I created in 2022, Dark Magic. I created Dark Magic based on how some people use magic for their own personal agenda or some spiritual purposes. While others do not have a purpose for magic at all. What is the meaning behind dark magic? Dark magic symbolizes how some people want to have the power of humans. This creates an overwhelming sense of imbalance.

James A. Porter

"James Amos Porter was the first African American art historian. Born on December 22, 1905 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Lydia and John Porter, a prominent minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Porter graduated  cum laude  in 1927 with a Bachelor of Science in art from Howard University. After graduating, he became an instructor of drawing and painting at Howard, teaching for 40 years, during which he was described as a gifted and influential teacher. Porter continued his education at the Art Student League in New York City, New York under Dimitri Romanovsky. Later, he met research librarian Dorothy Burnett in Harlem and married her on December 27, 1929. They had one daughter, Constance Porter.
