Creative Resilience

Creative Resilience.Digital art created on canvas. September 20, 2024. Afrika Abney

“Resilience is an essential theme within the realm of abstract painting, and my journey through the intricacies of creative expression began during my academic years. Throughout this time, I encountered numerous challenges that tested my ability to adapt and innovate. These experiences have not only shaped my artistic vision but have also empowered me to transform obstacles into opportunities for growth. By embracing both traditional and unconventional materials, I have been able to cultivate a diverse body of work that reflects my commitment to overcoming adversity.

The inquiries posed by my professors, particularly regarding the potential limitations of available materials, have significantly influenced my artistic process. Rather than viewing a lack of resources as a setback, I have learned to approach it as a chance to explore alternative avenues of creativity. This mindset has allowed me to utilize whatever materials are at my disposal, fostering a sense of resourcefulness that is integral to my practice. Each piece I create is a testament to my ability to adapt and innovate, demonstrating that true artistry often emerges from the constraints we face.

In my work, the color brown serves as a powerful symbol of resilience. It embodies the strength and stability that arise from navigating through challenges and uncertainties. This hue, often associated with the earth and natural elements, reflects the grounding force that resilience provides in the creative process. By incorporating brown into my abstract compositions, I aim to convey a sense of endurance and perseverance, inviting viewers to engage with the deeper narrative of overcoming obstacles and embracing the transformative power of art.”

“Whereas, the essence of creativity in abstract art lies in its ability to challenge conventional artistic norms and provoke thought that often utilize a variety of techniques, such as layering, gestural brushwork, and the interplay of light and shadow, to create dynamic compositions that captivate the viewer's attention. This freedom of expression not only reflects inner thoughts and feelings but also invites the audience to embark on a journey of discovery, where the absence of defined forms can lead to a deeper understanding of the complexities of human emotion and perception

Furthermore, the role of creativity in abstract art extends beyond the canvas, influencing various aspects of culture and society.”

Life in Black and White through the lens of the artist

Life in Black and White through the lens of the artist captures abstract paintings using black and white paint on paper to resemble how society, community and world divides human beings based on race and excludes them from activities. If we want racism and discrimination to end, we must stop segregating and racial inequity. I have created several paintings using only black and white colors to express how I have been impacted by racial profiling. When I mix both colors together, they make the color gray.  "Black isn't a primary, secondary, or tertiary color. In fact, black isn't on the color wheel because it isn't considered a color. It's all colors. Or rather, the absorption of all colors. Black absorbs all light in the color spectrum." "White is clean, simple, and pure. It stands in stark opposition to black, and its meanings are unequivocal. As white light contains all the colors of the spectrum, it’s an inclusive, impartial color, favoring no single ...

By concentrating on the present, we can create a solid foundation that aligns with our goals and desires. This perspective encourages individuals to engage in activities that are not only fulfilling but also resonate with their core values, thereby ensuring that the future we envision is a natural extension of our current efforts and mindset.”

The essence of human achievement

“In the perspective of Carl Gustav Jung, the ultimate goals of human existence are embodied in faith, hope, love, and insight. He posited that these attributes are the result of a person's engagement with life and the wisdom gained through various experiences. Jung's assertion highlights the importance of experiential learning, indicating that the development of these virtues is a dynamic process shaped by the trials and triumphs one faces. Thus, the essence of human achievement lies not only in the attainment of these ideals but also in the transformative journey that leads to their realization.” Quote found on the Internet I am proud of myself for the achievements I have made in my artistic career, and I am committed to continuing to strive for excellence.
