Professor Winston Kennedy

"Winston Kennedy, an artist and art historian, is professor emeritus from Howard University, Washington, DC. There, he taught printmaking, art management and photography, and other courses for 29 years. He was, during part of that time, chairman of the Art Department and director of the Gallery of Art. As an artist he has exhibited his prints in galleries and museums in the United States, South America and Europe."

I was a student when I apprenticed under the direction of Professor Winston Kennedy. I studied printmaking.

I chose brown ochre to represent the color of my skin. White and black to represent the racism and discrimination that I began to experience in the 1990s and continued beyond the 1990s. There is darkness within the experiences of racism and discrimination. However, the contrasting colors represent the persistence of overcoming the hardships of experiencing racism and discrimination.
