Red. Digital art created on canvas. Afrika Abney
I
created these digital art pieces to portray the symbolism of
my ancestors. Red represents the blood that my ancestors went through.
The sacrifices, brutality, pain, agony and suffering.
"The life of a nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous.” - Frederick Douglas
"Frederick Douglass was an African-American social reformer,
abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery
in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement
in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and
incisive antislavery writings. "
I learned about Frederick Douglass when I was a student at NationHouse from Baba Agyei.
"Red symbolizes the bloodshed by enslaved ancestors due to the transatlantic slave trade, explains James Beard Award winner Adrian Miller, author of Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue."
