October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM)

When National Arts and Humanities was launched in 1993, I was 16 and just graduated from high school and entering college. Additionally, I had several opportunities that took place in 1993.  Art Curator. New Harlem Gallery, New York City. 1992 - 1993.  Installed art for some of the exhibitions held at the New Harlem Gallery. Participated in the Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's Congressional Art Competition in 1992 and 1993  "October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM)—a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. NAHM was launched by Americans for the Arts more than 30 years ago as National Arts Week in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1993, it was reestablished by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners as a month-long celebration, with goals of: ✴️ FOCUSING on equitable access to the arts. ✴️ ENCOURAGING people participate in the arts. ✴️ ALLOWING governments and busi

Canvas

I first learned about various canvas art materials when I was a student at the Corcoran and Bell.  I attended Bell from 1991-1993. I graduated in 1993 and was 16 at that time. Years later, I donated the painting shown in the above photo. Additionally, I gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photo above.  "Canvas panels are rigid boards with a layer of canvas glued to them, they're a good alternative to stretched canvas. These boards are thinner than stretched canvas which makes them convenient for painting outdoors. They're also popular among painters who like to work small. In case you're not familiar with this work surface, canvas paper is a heavyweight paper with a textured, coated surface that closely replicates the finished surface of a canvas. It typically comes in flat sheets that are bound like a drawing or bristol board pad. Modern canvas is usually made of  cotton or linen, or sometimes polyvinyl chloride (PVC), although historically it was

The 1990s

Why are you talking about the 1990s? These are some old photos of me. Please note that I have given away these items depicted in the photos. "What were the best known art movements in the 1990s? Culture jamming was a well known movement of the 1990s as was  graffiti art . Transgressive art, or art that used shocking images as social critique was also popular." Despite to what the popular art was when I was a student, I continued to create abstract art.

Fall Colors

"The colors most associated with fall are orange, red, yellow and brown, inspired by the seasonal changing of leaves' colors as temperatures drop and daylight shrinks." Autumn Landscape #1. Acrylic on Canvas. Afrika Abney  "Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature." -  Friedrich Nietzsche

Art and Literature

"Art and literature are fundamental to the human experience. They allow people to express themselves and to connect to one another. All human cultures produce some form of art; it is a universal human cultural touchstone." In fact book covers, brochures, book marks, flyers, post cards are created by the work of professional visual artists like myself. Some books are solely published using pictures. So, how can you say literature is separate from visual arts? Summer Blossoms. Acrylic on Canvas. 14 * 18. Afrika Abney Summer Blossoms, abstract finger painting created on canvas using colors that represent the Summer. Featured on the cover of a book and the painting is entitled: Summer Blossoms. It is entitled: Kaleidoscope.

Summer Sunsets

" Research shows that sunsets have many psychological effects that  enhance the long-lasting satisfaction of in life and physical benefits and have been proven to relieve stress.  Things that can enhance the colors of the sunset include smoke particles, dust, smog, and basically any increased number of tiny aerosols in the upper levels of the atmosphere. This enhances the scattering effect and allows for more yellow, orange, and red to reach out eyes leading to better sunsets.  And if you want to do a sunset, use warm and dark saturated colors, like  red, orange, magenta and purple." “Sunset shows that life is too beautiful to hold on to the past, so move on to the present.” - Author Unknown Summer Sunsets. It is an abstract finger painting created on canvas using acrylic paint.  Summer Sunsets. August 2, 2022. 14 *18. Acrylic on canvas. Afrika Abney. $100

Charcoal Art Supply

When I was a student at the Corcoran from 1993 - 1997,I used charcoal art supply often. I do not recall using this material in the 1980s.  " Charcoal is  a black crumbly drawing material made of carbon and often used for sketching and under-drawing for paintings , although can also be used to create more finished drawings. " I attended Corcoran from 1993-1997. I graduated in 1997. Years later, I donated the charcoal drawing shown in the above photo. Additionally, I gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photo above. “Did you ever have something to say and feel as if the whole side of the wall wouldn’t be big enough to say it on, and then sit down on the floor and try to get it onto a sheet of charcoal paper?” ~ Georgia O’Keeffe “I use charcoal a lot. Partly because it has such a fantastic range but also because it is very easy to erase. For me, drawing is a lot to do with taking out, with returning to the white of the paper.” ~ John Berger

Rhythms of Life

" This word is also used to describe life. The rhythm of life is  a way of life that brings our legitimate needs, our deepest desires, and our unique talents into harmony with each other . And it is different from routine, which is defined as strong, regular, repeated pastern by which people do live."  "We have to slow the rhythm of rush in our lives so that the best of who are can emerge." -  Lysa TerKeurst "The rhythm of life is a jazz rhythm."- Langston Hughes Rhythms of Life. Acrylic on Canvas. 20 * 24. Afrika Abney. $250.00. 2005

Art in the 1980s

" When it comes to visual arts, the 1980s were marked by the appearance of Neo-expressionism, an art phenomenon which spurred around the globe. In general, Neo-Expressionist works are characterized by their intense expressive subjectivity, highly textural applications of paint, vividly contrasting colors and return to large-scale narrative imagery. Neo-Expressionist artists depicted their subjects in an almost raw and brutish manner, newly resurrecting in their frequently large-scale works, the highly textural and expressive brushwork and intense colors that had been rejected by the immediately preceding art movements. Critical to Warhol's reinvention of painting was the revival of the medium by the  Neo-Expressionist painters . Warhol was both enamored with the new painting and challenged by it. He relished the youthful vitality of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel."

Art Styles of the 1990s

" Many of the more progressive art movements of the 1990s actually began in the 1980s. Some of these include transgressive art, street art, and activist art, and using art as a cultural critique. Art often was inspired by the negative views and attitudes that young artists in the 1990s had about the 1980s and the values that were espoused during that decade. There were a few key characteristics seen throughout famous 90s art style designs. Generally, however, these were some of the key qualities of the 90s aesthetic: Vibrant colors:  bright yellow, pink, purple, fluorescent green, cerulean blue, neon lasers. All these colors were applied to patterns for a bold and eye-catching effect in 90s graphics.  Abstract shapes:  bold, abstract, geometric shapes were standard in the 90s aesthetic. Patterns like polka dots were applied everywhere from clothing to famous 90s art. "

Ms. Afrika Abney attended Corcoran from 1993-1997. She graduated in 1997. Years later, Ms. Abney donated the charcoal drawing shown in the above photo. Additionally, she gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photo above.   From 1993 - 1997, I attended the Corcoran School of the Art. While, I was a college student, I had the opportunity to exhibit some of my artwork. However, I also had several other unpleasant experiences and met Ms. Lois M. Jones before she passed.  "Only a block from the White House and just a short walk from the historic National Mall, the Corcoran Gallery of Art stands as a major center of American and European art. It is simultaneously one of America’s most distinguished museums and colleges of art and design. It is a place where the past, present, and future of the visual arts come to life. The museum’s extensive collection of American and European masterworks present the best of the past; through its ongoing exhibitions of contemporary ar
