Why I taught the arts?

When I was a little girl, I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. I choose the arts as a vehicle and outlet for me to express myself through using the arts. If it was not for the love of the arts and I had the opportunity to teach visual arts throughout my community in the past. It gave me the opportunity to express myself as it is related to bullying and culture, especially to minority race.

Art is a another way of thinking and using the brain. It contributes to developing creativity - not just the crayon and paper type of art - but it transfers to other subjects in solving problems and using higher critical thinking skills. It is also building motor skills and social skills as well. An art objective is very specific and has learning components that increase knowledge, comprehension, analysis and synthesis.

I taught various visual art forms such as collage design, abstract painting, and drawing to children and youth. It was my goal to combine my range of experiences and enthusiasm for shaping children and youth minds through the visual arts as well as advocating for the importance of visual arts education in the community.

Soft Yellows

Soft Yellows. Digital art created on canvas. September 20, 2024. Afrika Abney The shades of soft yellows conveys a sense of optimism. “The concept of optimism within the sphere of abstract art serves as a powerful lens through which to explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of artistic expression. Abstract art, characterized by its departure from representational forms, allows artists to convey feelings and ideas that transcend the limitations of traditional imagery. This genre often embraces vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, and fluid compositions, all of which can evoke a sense of hope and positivity. The absence of concrete subjects invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a personal level, fostering an optimistic interpretation that resonates with their own experiences and aspirations. Furthermore, the role of optimism in abstract art extends beyond individual interpretation; it can also reflect broader societal themes and aspirations. In times of uncertainty or tur...

Christmas Eve

Quote found on the Internet It is Christmas Eve and I pray that those that celebrate Christmas prayers are answered. On this Christmas Eve, I would like my only prayer for a single hetrosexual male over the age of 30 to marry me. I believe that Christmas eve and Christmas are about genuine love, affection, showing compassion, demonstrating understanding, being trustworthy, loyal, faithful, having mutual respect and meaningful conversations without judgement, bias and prejudice. I do not want a hetrosexual husband that has no respect for himself and those that raised him to be a gentleman with standards, values, ethics, and self-expression.  I do not believe in the superficiality of Christmas eve and Christmas. I believe in the essence of gifts that come from the heart and treasured stories that have symbolism, inspiration and instill principles such as determination and purpose. Some of the movies that I watched in the past on Christmas Eve include Frosty Snowman and ...

Colors in Art

Colors in art are what makes the art piece intriguing.  Blues are cool colors representing a calming effect. While, red, yellow and orange are warm colors. Each color on the wheel depicts a different meaning. I often use orange, red, purple, brown and black in my paintings whether on canvas or digital. "Orange is associated with meanings of joy, warmth, heat, sunshine, enthusiasm, creativity, success, encouragement, change, determination, health, stimulation, happiness, fun, enjoyment, balance, sexuality, freedom, expression, and fascination. Orange is the color of joy and creativity. Orange promotes a sense of general wellness and emotional energy that should be shared, such as compassion, passion, and warmth. Orange will help a person recover from disappointments, a wounded heart, or a blow to one’s pride."  "Red represents power and courage.  The color red is an intense color that is packed with emotion ranging from passionate, intense love to anger and ...

Tranquil Gray

“Throughout my years as a student, spanning from 1978 to 1997, I cultivated a variety of character traits that have significantly shaped my personality. Among these traits, the color light gray serves as a poignant representation. This particular shade embodies a sense of tranquility and simplicity, reflecting a hopeful outlook that has accompanied me throughout my educational journey. The period of my academic life was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was also a transformative experience that fostered the development of my character. Light gray, as a neutral hue, symbolizes the calmness I sought during challenging times and the straightforwardness. This color resonates with the essence of my experiences, encapsulating the balance I strived for in both my studies and personal growth. As I reflect on my time when I was a student, the traits I developed are intricately linked to the qualities represented by light gray. This color signifies not only a serene disposition but al...

Themes in art

My recent blog posts that I posted on my branding blog are geared towards different themes in art. “A theme in art is a broad idea or message that an artist conveys through their work, or that an audience receives when viewing it. Themes are often universal ideas that explore fundamental topics such as life, society, or human nature. They are usually implied rather than explicitly stated.” Human nature is symbolized by the color red in a striking painting by me. The vibrant red represents various aspects of life and emotions, delving into the depths of humanity. In contrast, the painting "Life" intertwines red, green, and blue to convey meanings of passion, birth, and growth. The dynamic visual experience captures the essence of passion, growth, and renewal in the human experience. Additionally, the colors green and blue symbolize renewal, growth, and new beginnings, encouraging viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of life and embrace change. Furthermore, the colors y...

Depths of Visual Expression

Depths of Visual Expression. Digital art created on canvas. September 23, 2024. Afrika Abney "My approach to visual art is centered around the realm of abstract painting. I have cultivated a diverse skill set that encompasses both traditional techniques and modern digital methods, allowing me to explore the nuances of abstraction in various forms. This duality in my practice enables me to express complex emotions and concepts through a unique blend of colors, shapes, and textures. With a foundation in traditional abstract painting, I have honed my ability to manipulate physical materials such as paint, canvas, and brushes to create dynamic compositions. This hands-on experience has provided me with a deep understanding of color theory and the interplay of light and shadow, which I then translate into my digital work. The transition to digital abstract painting has further expanded my creative possibilities, allowing for experimentation with tools and effects that enhance my artist...

Creative Shadows Palette

Creative Shadows Palette. Digital art created on canvas. September 12, 2024. Afrika Abney Integrating elements of shadows and creativity into my professional repertoire has become a defining aspect of my work. The interplay between light and dark not only enhances the visual appeal of my projects but also adds depth and complexity to my creative expressions. By embracing these contrasting elements, I am able to craft a more nuanced narrative that resonates with my audience, inviting them to explore the subtleties and intricacies of my artistic vision. Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience in conventional environments as a professional visual artist and art consultant. At this stage in my life, I am not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with any single man who is over the age of 30. My primary concentration lies in the realms of branding and digital art, where I aim to offer my expertise as a professional visual artist and art consultant. My approach to d...
