Choice of art materials

Photos from Internet

"The medium that an artist chooses to work with contributes to both the style of the art and its meaning. It can also enhance the texture. Medium is not a neutral choice in artwork but rather a highly complex and codified one. To learn about art, it is important to understand how mediums are used and why."

When selecting materials to produce my new collages and paintings, I generally think about what I am creating before hand.
For example, research suggests that smaller pieces sell faster than larger pieces.

I prefer creating my new collages and paintings using 5 * 7 canvas panels, and 8 * 10 canvas, 9 * 12 canvas.

Tapestry of Creativity

Quote found on the Internet  This evening, as I find myself enveloped in the comforting embrace of my creative space, my mind drifts toward the vivid array of colors that I long to incorporate into my digital artwork. I take a moment to reflect on the collection of shades I have gathered, particularly drawn to the gentle tones that evoke a sense of calm and serenity. The soothing sounds of nature fill the air around me, and I gaze at the overcast sky, which seems to mirror the soft hues I wish to explore. With inspiration flowing from the world outside and the quotes that resonate with my artistic vision, I feel a surge of excitement as I prepare to unleash my digital brush upon the canvas, ready to manifest a delicate and harmonious palette. Reflecting on my journey, I recall my high school years from 1991 to 1993, a time that shaped my identity and aspirations. Those memories, while distant, serve as a foundation for my current endeavors. I consciously choose to leave the ...

Canvas of Experiences

Canvas of Experiences. Digital art created on canvas. October 26, 2024. Afrika Abney  I am a dedicated and passionate professional. In the 1990s up until 1996, I was a teenager. I chose brown ochre to represent the color of my skin. White and black to represent the racism and discrimination that I began to experience in the 1990s and continued beyond the 1990s. Shaping Identity and Artistic Journey

Between the years 1989 and 1996, I experienced my formative teenage years, a period that significantly shaped my identity and artistic journey. In sharing this brief overview of my background, I aim to provide insight into my development as a professional visual artist and art consultant. This information serves to inform non-visual artists and those unfamiliar with my work about my artistic evolution and the experiences that have influenced my creative practice. Values. 1992. By delving into these narratives, I hope to convey the depth and complexity of my artistic vi...

Expressive Brushwork

Expressive Brushwork. Digital art created on canvas. August 17, 2024. Afrika Abney  “The phrase "digital brushstrokes" encapsulates the method of crafting art through digital mediums that mimic the techniques of traditional painting. Artists utilize specialized software that provides a variety of virtual brushes, each customizable in terms of size, opacity, and texture. This modern technique empowers creators to develop complex designs and vibrant visuals that can closely mirror the effects of real paint on canvas. Additionally, the digital format offers unparalleled convenience, allowing artists to easily revert changes or adjust specific elements of their work without the constraints of physical materials. In the world of digital artistry, the interpretation of brushstrokes has undergone remarkable transformation, leading to an expansive array of styles and artistic expressions. This evolution has opened up new avenues for artists to explore, enabling them to blend tradit...

The evolution of my abstract painting style

The evolution of my abstract painting style has been a fascinating journey marked by experimentation and growth. Initially, my approach was heavily influenced by traditional techniques, focusing on structured forms and a limited color palette. As I delved deeper into the world of abstraction, I began to embrace spontaneity and fluidity, allowing my emotions and instincts to guide my brushstrokes. This shift not only expanded my creative horizons but also led to a more personal expression in my work, as I started to explore themes of inclusion,  injustice, discrimination, prejudice and much more.

Essence of Reflection

Essence of Reflection. Digital art created on canvas. September 26, 2024. Afrika Abney “Throughout my previous artistic endeavors, I have engaged in a process of reflection that involved critically assessing my abstract paintings and collages. This introspective evaluation led me to make the difficult decision to discard several pieces a few months back. The act of reflection has been instrumental in my artistic growth, allowing me to identify which works resonate with my evolving vision and which do not. Research indicates that the color white is often linked to the concept of reflection, symbolizing clarity and contemplation. However, the colors I have selected for my reflective process are deeply intertwined with my personal identity. Each hue I incorporate serves as a representation of my experiences, emotions, and the multifaceted nature of who I am as an artist.”
