Visual art and artistic process

My visual art is crafted entirely on my computer, utilizing various digital software tools that allow for a wide range of creative expression. This modern approach enables me to explore different techniques and styles, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms. The digital medium provides me with the flexibility to experiment and refine my work in ways that are both innovative and efficient. Previously, my artistic process took place on the floor of my home, where I balanced both my workspace and creative endeavors. This intimate setting fostered a unique environment that encouraged spontaneity and inspiration. Yellow represents the vibrant energy of social movements, while pink embodies the spirit of activism, and blue signifies the pursuit of social justice, particularly in the context of racism, injustice, and discrimination. Each of these colors serves as a powerful visual representation of the struggles. Together, these colors form a cohesive narrative that highlights the interconnectedness of social movements, activism, and the quest for justice.”

Kuumba Suras/The Figures of Africa

When I was working at the Phillips Collection, I exhibited Kuumba Suras/The Figures of Africa in 2000. •"James McLaugin Memorial Staff Show." Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. 2000 GALLERY ASSISTANT . Phillips Collection. 2000. Responsible for monitoring and keeping artwork safe during gallery hours. I participated in the James McLaugin Memorial Staff Show which took place at the Phillips Collection in 2000. This was an interesting opportunity for me because I not only participated in the art exhibit, but was also a staff member at the Phillips in 2000. "For more than 25 years, The Phillips Collection has held a staff show to feature the works of artists employed at the museum. In 1984, the staff show was endowed by the family of James McLaughlin, an accomplished still-life painter who worked at the museum for 50 years. In 1932, McLaughlin began his association with Duncan Phillips as a student at the Phillips Gallery Art School. Until his death in 198...

The significance of repetition

The significance of repetition. Digital art created on canvas. September 28, 2024. Afrika Abney For those that do not have a background in fine art, specifically abstract painting, one needs to understand that creating art is all about repetition. Use of materials and tools to depict emotion and thoughts through color, form and shape. “The significance of repetition in both abstract digital art and traditional abstract painting cannot be overstated, as it serves as a fundamental principle that enhances the viewer's experience and understanding of the artwork. In abstract digital art, repetition can manifest through the use of recurring shapes, colors, or patterns, creating a rhythm that draws the viewer's eye and encourages deeper engagement with the piece. This technique not only establishes a sense of harmony and balance within the composition but also allows for the exploration of variations and transformations, inviting the audience to perceive subtle differences and nuanc...

Tranquil Skies

Tranquil Skies. Digital art created on canvas. August 14, 2024. Afrika Abney “The hue of blue has long been associated with various celestial phenomena, and one of the most captivating is its connection to the Waxing Gibbous Moon. This phase of the moon, characterized by its almost full appearance, casts a serene and enchanting glow that often evokes feelings of tranquility and introspection. The deep, rich tones of blue can mirror the vastness of the night sky, creating a harmonious relationship between the color and the moon's luminous presence. As the moon waxes, it becomes a symbol of growth and potential, much like the way blue can represent depth and stability. Waxing Gibbous Moon, the color blue takes on a deeper significance. This phase occurs just before the full moon, when the moon is illuminated more than half but less than fully, symbolizing a time of anticipation and preparation. The blue light that filters through the atmosphere during this phase can evoke a sense o...

Pushing boundaries and challenging artistic norms

Pushing boundaries and challenging artistic norms. Digital art created on canvas. August 3, 2024. Afrika Abney Pushing boundaries and challenging artistic norms serves as a testament to my commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging the norms of traditional artistic expression. The black canvas not only provides a stark contrast to the vibrant elements that may be incorporated within the piece but also invites viewers to delve deeper into the emotional and conceptual layers that the artist has meticulously crafted. The choice of a black background is intentional, as it symbolizes the infinite possibilities of creativity and the depth of thought that can emerge from the void. My work is characterized by a relentless pursuit of redefining artistic conventions, and this piece exemplifies that ethos. By utilizing a black background, the artist not only enhances the visual impact of the piece but also creates a space for reflection and introspection. This artwork invites viewers to co...
