On DC Public Schools

I attended a DC Public School from 1991 - 1993 and graduated from the school when I was 16 which was in 1993.

I attended Bell from 1991-1993. I graduated in 1993 and was 16 at that time. Years later, I donated the painting shown in the above photo. Additionally, I gave away the clothing articles and jewelry shown in the photo above.

Additionally, I provided many services for several DC Public Schools. Among them include Calvin Coolidge High School and Eliot Middle School.

Artistic Radiance

Artistic Radiance. Digital art created on canvas. September 26, 2024. Afrika Abney  “Artistic Radiance depicts the interplay of yellow and purple not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also serves to convey meaning and symbolism. Yellow often represents radiance, optimism and clarity, while purple is frequently linked to creativity and spirituality. Together, they can symbolize a balance between joy and introspection, making them a powerful duo in visual storytelling.”

Golden Ember

“Golden Ember is characterized by its rich, dark yellow hue, a color that resonates with the flickering essence of fire. This particular shade evokes the mesmerizing glow of smoldering embers, those glowing remnants that symbolize warmth and illumination. The depth of this tone not only captures the eye but also stirs the imagination, inviting one to reflect on the stories and memories associated with the comforting light of a fire. What distinguishes this deep yellow from its brighter counterparts is its sophisticated and grounded quality. It embodies the spirit of the changing seasons, especially the transition into autumn, when nature adorns itself in a stunning array of warm colors. The richness of dark yellow serves as a reminder of the beauty found in this seasonal shift, where the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry. Furthermore, the allure of this shade can evoke images of a sunset, where the sun gracefully descends beyond the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow...

Optimistic Whisper

“Optimistic Whisper" utilizes a soft pale yellow hue to effectively convey a sense of hope and positivity. This choice of color is significant, as pale yellow is often associated with warmth, light, and a gentle brightness that can uplift the spirit. The subtlety of the shade allows for a nuanced expression of optimism. The concept of optimism within the sphere of abstract art serves as a powerful lens through which to explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of artistic expression. Abstract art, characterized by its departure from representational forms, allows artists to convey feelings and ideas that transcend the limitations of traditional imagery. This genre often embraces vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, and fluid compositions, all of which can evoke a sense of hope and positivity. The absence of concrete subjects invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a personal level, fostering an optimistic interpretation that resonates with their own experiences and asp...

Process of Reflection

As I contemplate my journey as an artist, I realize that there have been countless moments when I chose to discard my creations. This decision often stemmed from a deep-seated understanding that the materials I used, the techniques I employed, and the overall quality of the work did not meet the standards I set for myself.  Throughout my artistic development, I have encountered numerous instances where I felt compelled to part ways with my own artwork. The reasons behind these choices were multifaceted, often rooted in the realization that the materials I selected, the methods I applied, and the final execution of the piece was due to the color choices.   In looking back at my artistic path, I can identify a significant number of artworks that I ultimately decided to discard. Each discarded piece served as a catalyst for my evolution, encouraging me to pursue a higher level of craftsmanship and to remain committed to producing work that truly resonates with my arti...

Life in Black and White through the lens of the artist

Life in Black and White through the lens of the artist captures abstract paintings using black and white paint on paper to resemble how society, community and world divides human beings based on race and excludes them from activities. If we want racism and discrimination to end, we must stop segregating and racial inequity. I have created several paintings using only black and white colors to express how I have been impacted by racial profiling. When I mix both colors together, they make the color gray.  "Black isn't a primary, secondary, or tertiary color. In fact, black isn't on the color wheel because it isn't considered a color. It's all colors. Or rather, the absorption of all colors. Black absorbs all light in the color spectrum." "White is clean, simple, and pure. It stands in stark opposition to black, and its meanings are unequivocal. As white light contains all the colors of the spectrum, it’s an inclusive, impartial color, favoring no single ...

Problem-Solving Palette

Problem-Solving Palette. Digital art created on canvas. September 24, 2024. Afrika Abney “As an abstract painter, I delve into problem-solving through painting, aiming to create art that captivates the eye and engages the mind and soul. The journey involves seeking solutions, navigating uncertainties, and expressing complex emotions through brushstrokes and color choices. This exploration transforms uncertainties into tangible expressions on the canvas, reflecting my inner world and identity. Each stroke and color choice embodies the complexities of my thoughts and emotions, allowing me to articulate feelings that are often difficult to express in words. The act of painting becomes a dialogue between my subconscious and the external world, revealing layers of meaning that contribute to a deeper understanding of who I am.” I am a dedicated, detailed and results-oriented independent professional with a robust background in contracting and consulting, particularly in the realm of art as a...

Forward-looking approach

I kindly request that you refrain from repeatedly inquiring about the events of 1993. At that time, I was merely 16 years old, and the context of those years may not hold the same significance for me as it does for you. As we are now in the year 2024, it is important to focus on the present and the future rather than dwelling on the past. ART CURATOR. New Harlem Gallery, New York City. 1992 - 1993.
